Installation of Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 (or 4.x) is as much easy as when you install software using apt-get or GUI Software Center in Ubuntu.

Debian packages are provided in one tar.gz archive. Download it and do the following steps. Before the installation process ensure that LibreOffice is removed to aviod some conflicts.

Extract the archive:

tar -zxvf Apache_OpenOffice_incubating_3.4.1_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_pl.tar.gz

Go to the directory that contains DEB packages:

cd pl/DEBS

While I was installing polish version, you will probably install version with different language. If so, change directory name to proper one – for english version go to:

cd en-US/DEBS

Now force all DEB files to be installed – type:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

After the installation go one level deeper to get OpenOffice menus:

cd desktop-integration

Install the stuff whitin:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

You are done. Enjoy your OpenOffice.
